General Music Course Description
The textbook for this standards based course is Making Music by Silver Burdett Ginn.
Students will need a recorder which can be purchased from the student store for $5.
The major emphasis of this course is to provide students with a variety of musical experiences and activities. The course develops the following skills: singing, listening, reading and writing music, and playing classroom instruments according to what is available. The course provides opportunities for growth in understanding the following musical elements: rhythm, melody, form or design, tempo, dynamics, timbre or tone color, harmony, and style. The course also develops discrimination and critical judgment in music that is heard or produced, and encourages interest in music from diverse cultures and historical periods. May be repeated for credit
Chorus Course Description
The major emphasis of this course is on singing activities and vocal production. This standards based course develops the skills necessary for ensemble singing of choral literture appropriately arranged for middle school voices, and in reading music notation. The course also provides opportunities for growth in the understanding of musical elements (rhythm, melody, form, harmony, expressive elements, and style) as applied to the music performed. Students will learn to enjoy participating in vocal music; work cooperatively with other students in the musical organization and serve the school by participating in selected performances. May be repeated for credit.

February 2009 African American History Assembly
Students performed a choral speech (rap) composed by the 6th grade General Music piano soloist pictured above. The choral speech assignment was a part of a General Music lesson about the history of rap. How exciting to perform a piece created by one of the students.

Participants of the 6th Annual 2009 LAUSD MS Honor Chorus from the Daniel Webster MS Chorus. These gentlemen performed with 130 other vocalists at the Nokia Theatre on May 3. See them on television when it airs. For six years vocalists have auditioned and participated. Way to go. Keep the tradition alive. Next year, it could be you.
